REDNESS

WHAT + HOW

As you age, your skin gets thinner and you may begin to see little spots and patches of redness. Most likely these are broken capillaries. Broken capillaries are easier to see when they are just under the surface of the skin. Fair-skinned people are genetically prone to thinner skin, and are most often the ones who experience this condition, regardless of age. Broken capillaries –telangiectasia –usually develop around the cheek and nasal area. Broken capillaries gradually and slowly spread. They may form patterns which appear like “lace” on your cheeks, forehead and/or chin.

Chronic inflammatory conditions are one of the prime causes of spider veins. Aside from rosacea, experts believe the number-one cause of the inflammation responsible for your spider veins: the sun. Other causes include excessive irritation from using harsh detergents, undergoing too many aggressive chemical peels and dermabrasion procedures, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Once the blood vessel wall is broken, it cannot be reversed with a topical or oral supplement.  It can, however, be eradicated with the use of lasers.

  • Get a diagnosis from a board certified dermatologist.
  • Are your spider veins the result of rosacea? If so, the treatment will be entirely different.
  • Make sure that your laser treatment will eliminate the spider veins: does the office have the appropriate laser?
  • IPL is considered the gold standard for spider vein eradication.

Minimize vascular dilation by avoiding:

  • Hot baths and showers.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Skin care products with glycolic acids and sulfates.
  • Harsh cleansing grains, skin polishes and exfoliants.
  • Spicy, sugary and citrus foods.
